HJ Kingswood/Rolls Royce
$22,990
*SOLD*
This HJ Kingswood started life as all the others did, until it landed at Adelaide’s Custom Car building shop “Creative Cars”, where it received some
British styling with a Rolls Royce front & rear finely grafted on. Only in the 80’s!
In the 80’s the King of Bodykit transformations was Geoff Heard, owner of Creative Cars in Adelaide, South Australia.
His business was thriving, turning VW Beetles into Porsche Carrera’s and Toyota Celica’s into Ferrari’s, just to name a few of his Creations.
Then in the late 80’s he stepped it up a notch dreaming of converting the standard Australian Holden Kingswood into a Rolls Royce, Silver Spirit,
one of the most luxurious cars on Earth at the time and selling for around $250,000.
However Geoff’s Custom Rolls wasn’t cheap to order due to the huge amount of man hours needed for the transformation and the expensive price of the
Rolls Royce parts required. They were selling for around $30,000 using a 12 year old Kingswood as the platform. To give a comparison a brand new
Holden VL Calais Turbo was around the same price in 1988. However they were getting ordered still, mainly by Limousine Hire Companies and a
few well off Aussies.
By the end of the run Geoff’s Company had produced around 7 Rolls Sedans and 2 or 3 stretched Limousine versions. This all came to an abrupt end
when Rolls Royce tried to Sue Creative Cars and shut down the practice of replicating their trusty British Iconic Brand.
It has made these Australian produced modified Kingswood’s extremely rare and a strange story in their part of Australia’s Motoring History,
that has unfortunately now ended for good. Street Machine Magazine did an article on these cars and the business that produced them in October 2021
as the few that remain, have resurfaced in private car collections more than 3 decades on.
Now that you know the story, let us tell you a little about the car…
It started life as a 1976 HJ Kingswood in the colour Chamois (very pale Green), with Brown trim and a Holden 202ci engine.
Creative Cars looked for mint, rust free, super clean examples to modify, to cut costs and time with unnecessary repairs. It then had the complete
fibreglass front and rear clip fitted, with grill, lights & bumpers, modifications to the doors and sills to tie it all in. Then a complete inside/out
respray in the colour of choice to finish off the lengthy body work fabrication and paint. The body and paint are in excellent condition still,
which indicates the quality of the workmanship at Creative Cars in the 80’s. The floors and entire exterior are rust free, with only some light signs
of surface rust or small bubbles on the inner sides of the doors.
Custom stainless steel side body moldings were then added, modified HJ Caprice window frame chrome trims fitted, Chrome side mirrors and side indicators
to finish off the side view Rolls Bling. Polished HJ Caprice hubcaps were fitted over chrome 5 slot mag wheels (still under the hubcaps) and the car rolls
on Genuine white wall tyres to complete that luxury old school look.
Open the door to see a beautiful HJ Caprice Interior that presents very well still, a perfect centre console, dash pad, cluster, door trims
and roof lining all in a Caramel Brown Colour. There is a woodgrain steering wheel with Rolls Royce horn cap to match the Caprice woodgrain dash.
To keep with the comfort theme it has tinted electric windows, power steering and air conditioning.
The 202 engine and trimatic transmission run well, pulling the big car with ease and are an ultra reliable combo for those that dont know.
It drives great, is a smooth ride and is pretty economical, geared for the open roads.
The reason this car is in such fantastic condition compared to other HJ Kingswood’s is that it was $30k to buy in the late 80’s (expensive),
was used sparingly as a Chauffeur Driven Limousine (see old pics attached), then purchased and dry stored by a car collector through the 2000’s.
With most Aussie Classic Cars averaging $50-100k nowadays, this attention getting vehicle, which is rich in Australian Motoring History is the perfect
collectors car and weekend cruiser for anyone who doesn’t have a spare $70k, but wants a rare & classic Aussie Car, with a fascinating story to tell.
